Lucky Penny's Replacement, Revealed

By Nuala Sawyer - Published on December 22, 2015.

Yesterday we wrote that the Lucky Penny diner on Masonic and Geary will be closing before the end of the week. Today, we've got a first look at a conceptual rendering for the seven-story multi-use building that will take its place.

As proposed earlier this year, the new building would have 21 two- to four-bedroom apartments spread over three of its seven floors, with the remaining floors designated for office space, retail space on the ground floor, and two levels of below-grade parking.

The design is not 100 percent final—it's still being tweaked while the developers receive feedback from the neighborhood.

"We continue to work on the building and have had positive meetings with the Planning Department and with interested neighbors and merchants in the area," Riyad Ghannam of RG Architecture told us. "We are working to incorporate feedback from both the department and community members now. We hope to be at the Planning Commission next fall for approvals."

Ghannam emphasizes that they will continue to refine the design "as we meet with community and neighborhood leaders over the coming months," but, judging from the initial plans, we can all be sure that the intersection of Masonic and Geary will look very different in the near future.
