The bright red door at 1552 Fillmore Street will soon be opening into a new spot: Mosu, a small fine-dining restaurant, will debut there next year.
1552 Fillmore used to be home to Korean tapas bar Zoomaak, which specialized in serving makgeolli, a rice-based flavored alcoholic drink. It closed down earlier this fall.
For a couple of months, the space stood empty, but was missing a "for lease" sign in the window. Yesterday, a Craigslist post went live, giving us some insight into the new tenant.
Mosu comes from South Korea native Sung Ahn, who was the chef de cuisine at Michelin-starred Richmond restaurant Aziza, and has also cooked at The French Laundry and Benu. According to a Williams-Sonoma feature, Ahn emigrated at 14 from Seoul to San Diego, where his parents ran a Chinese restaurant. After serving in the Army, including a stint in Iraq, he began to pursue his love of cooking.
With Mosu, Ahn is taking his skills to a smaller dining room. "We will have six tables and seat 18 guests maximum," he told us. "Reservations will be required, and only a tasting menu will be served." The menu has yet to be released, but it will lean towards Asian flavors and ingredients.
Mosu's Craigslist posting advertises that the restaurant is seeking a pastry chef and a sous chef. "Culinary school degree is preferred, as well as experience in Michelin-recognized restaurants," the ad states. Another job site lists a posting for a sommelier.
Mosu will open in January. We'll share more news on this new venture as plans develop.
