A home renovation at 79 Central Ave. near Haight Street took a macabre turn yesterday, according to a local source.

The owner had one of the walls knocked down during the project yesterday — and found a human skull in the wall.

Police cars and the medical examiner van could be seen outside the building for several hours afterwards, as officials looked into the situation.

It's not clear how old the skull is, who it belonged to, nor any other circumstances related to its location in the wall.

But we've confirmed the grisly discovery with the city medical examiner's office , who told us that the investigation is ongoing.

Unfortunately such finds happen from time to time. Most recently, partial remains of a child and a second person were discovered in a planter in the Alamo Square area in late November
