WesBurger Ending Mojo Pop-Up Next Week, Ahead Of Mission Restaurant LaunchPhoto: Stephen Jackson/Hoodline

Since 2013, Wes Rowe has been slinging burgers at Mojo Bicycle Cafe on Wednesday nights. With creations such as the pimento cheese burger, Moroccan lamb burger or spicy chili burger, WesBurger often draws big crowds.

But now, the pop-up is drawing to a close, as Rowe prepares to open his own restaurant in the Mission. We met up with the burger master one last time to talk about his three years serving burgers on Divisadero.

Why are you giving up the Mojo pop-up?

It's becoming more work than I'll be able to handle, doing both. My initial goal was to be able to keep both open, with a small hiatus, but as I'm getting closer to opening, it's beginning to seem unrealistic.

I'm pretty sad about this. Almost every week at Mojo, I can tell who the first 20 or so burgers will go to; I know my customers by first name. A lot of them will probably come visit me in my new space, but it won't quite be the same. Those people are my bread-and-butter customers.

What will you miss about the pop-up? Any favorite memories or creations?

Just being able to work with Remy, directly and indirectly. He's an amazing dude. He's been really great to work with, and it's been such a good thing for me. The proof of my success in that partnership is the opening own restaurant.

When is your last night at Mojo? What will you be serving?

My last night at Mojo is this Wednesday [March 16th], and I'll be serving the Hot Wes, which has onion rings, queso, and pickled jalapeños.

How long did it take you to find this new space at 18th and Mission? What exactly were you looking for?

It was surprising to us how this worked out. We did go through a broker, but I saw the sign in the window when I was getting lunch at Mission Chinese Food. I called, but she said she had 100 people or so interested. But I kept following up, and eventually got the spot.

The name of the new restaurant will be "WesBurger n' More"—can you give us a hint about one of the "more" items you'll be serving?

The "more" items should be pretty familiar to Mojo customers who order sides. Definitely fried chicken.

Will we still see you around the neighborhood?

I hope so! I love everywhere on Divis, and I'm going to miss the neighborhood a lot. I go to The Page a lot after work, the people there are rad. And then Bar Crudo— if I had any burgers left over at 10pm, I'd bring them over to the staff there, just as they were wrapping up for the night. I'd have a glass of wine and a piece of fish, and they'd eat. I think that's going to be mutually missed.

WesBurger n' More will open at 2240 Mission St. towards the end of March.
