Today Is Caffe Trieste's 60th Anniversary

Thanks to tipster Patrick R. for letting us know that the iconic Caffe Trieste at Vallejo Street and Grant Avenue, a cornerstone of the North Beach community, celebrates its 60th anniversary today—no foolin'. Co-owner Ida Zoubi says they're planning a celebration at a later date.

On this day in 1956, Trieste was established as the very first espresso coffeehouse on the West Coast. Established by “Papa Gianni” Giotta and his family, the shop "single-handedly launched the espresso movement as we know it," according to the company's website, and has been a hangout over the years for everyone from Jack Kerouac to Francis Ford Coppola.
