If you're a rainbow-loving Muni rider, tonight is your night. Hoodline just received word from SFMTA spokesperson Paul Rose that the much-discussed rainbow escalators at Castro station will begin operating tonight at 8pm. The unveiling comes nearly a month after SFMTA originally reported it would have the escalators up and running.

At tonight's kickoff, District 8 Supervisor Scott Wiener and SFMTA officials will turn on the rainbow escalator lights for the first time. "During the process of testing escalator capabilities and the new lights, staff liked what they saw and made the decision to keep the lights in place for the launch of the new system," said SFMTA in a press release.

Not everyone is thrilled about the new addition, especially given the escalators' famed unreliability. As one Hoodline commenter put it, "How about we get the escalators to work first before we decorate them?" We'll be out and about tonight asking people what they think of the escalators once they have a chance to see them for themselves. If you catch a glimpse, let us know what you think in the comments.
