After starting a series of fresh juice pop-ups around Oakland in 2012, Emanne Desouky and Rana Halpern opened Super Juiced in the courtyard of Swan’s Marketplace in November 2015.
Initially, the pair offered their wares at pop-ups in parks near Lake Merritt and at Bay Area events, but “we realized there really was a huge void in Oakland in terms of healthy food options that you could grab quickly,” Desouky told Hoodline.
The shop was partially funded with a Kiva loan used to purchase juicing and blending equipment. Desouky, who previously worked as a social justice organizer and cultural worker, raised $10,000 from 69 backers.
Each item on the menu is made from 100 percent organic, seasonal ingredients; options include $7 juice blends like Rose Glow (celery, apple, beet, ginger, cucumber, rose water), smoothies ($8 and up), and tonic shots for $4. Super Juiced also makes its own coconut and almond milk.
Super Juiced (540 9th St.) is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 – 5, closed Mondays.
