Bocadillos Tapas Bar and Restaurant closed its doors on Sunday, July 22nd.

SFGate broke the news, reporting that owners Gerald and Cameron Hirigoyen sold their Spanish-influenced restaurant after 13 years in the Financial District.

The Chronicle’s Michael Bauer rated Bocadillo highly in his review in 2004, praising the restaurant's food, mood and service: “Just about everything at Bocadillos explodes on the tongue, making for a very happy mouth.” Executive Chef James LaLonde was named SFGate's Rising Star Chef in 2014.

The Hirigoyens also own west coast Basque-inspired eatery Piperade on Battery Street in the Embarcadero, where Gerald Hirigoyen is executive chef. Chef Hirigoyen was raised in the Basque region of France and studied cooking in Paris; Piperade opened in 2002.

SFGate reported that price was a factor in the restaurant's closure, noting that Hirigoyen didn't want to compromise his concept by boosting prices. As Inside Scoop noted, Nothing on the compact menu was over $20, with most tapas under $10.

No word yet on what will be taking over the space, but we'll keep you updated.
