A shooting in a home near Corona Heights Park on Sunday night around 11:45pm sent a woman to the hospital and has led to a standoff between the gunman and police. Due to police activity, authorities have issued a shelter in place order for residents in the area.

According to police, units responded to a home near 15th and Beaver Streets after residents in the area reported hearing shots. When authorities arrived, they found a woman who was suffering from gunshot wounds. She was transported to the hospital, but no update on her condition has been released.

The suspect, who has not been identified, barricaded himself inside the home after the victim was taken to the hospital.

“We have a team of negotiators trying to get the suspect to surrender as soon as possible, and then we’ll be able to get on with our investigation,” Officer Robert Rueca told The Chronicle shortly before 7am this morning.

While the shelter in place order is in effect, residents are asked to remain in the rear of their homes. Muni lines that pass through the neighborhood are being rerouted.

We’ll continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

[Update: 3:37pm] After more than 15 hours, police announced at 3:21pm that the suspect has been taken into custody and the shelter in place order has been lifted.

The Examiner is reporting that the suspect suffered a self-inflicted wound and that the victim, a 60-year-old woman, succumbed to her injuries.
