After The Plant unexpectedly closed earlier this month, a new seafood spot, Seaside, has opened in the space on Pier 3 in the Embarcadero. Along with seafood, the new restaurant will serve up pizza, sandwiches and salad.
"We took over The Plant a couple of weeks ago and we're really excited about bringing Seaside to the space," general manager Steve Goerke told Hoodline over the phone.
Goerke is working with longtime friend Garret Meyers, who co-owns High Flying Foods with his brother. The company runs several restaurants at the San Francisco and Oakland airports, as well as Lou's Fish Shack in Fisherman's Wharf and Firewood Café in the Castro.
However, Seaside will be a separate business entity from High Flying Foods.
"The concept for the restaurant came about because of our love for the Mediterranean," Goerke said. "We love the style of food: nice, healthy, and fresh seafood. We thought it was a no-brainer."
The menu features offerings like a Dungeness crab louie salad, line-caught Pacific salmon in a cider-mustard glaze, and a whole, grilled sea bass with grilled lemon and fresh herbs.
There's also the house burger, topped with red onions, fontina, shredded iceberg, beefsteak tomato, and mustard aioli.
The previous tenants also had a pizza oven behind the bar counter, which Seaside is using to prepare signature pizzas, including one featuring longneck clams and white anchovy with broccolini, Calabrian peppers, tomato, oregano and capers, and another with forest mushrooms and truffles with fontina, rosemary and garlic oil.
The restaurant was move-in ready when Seaside took over. "The interior of the space was so nice with the high-vaulted ceilings and the patio that we didn't need to do much to get it ready," Goerke said. "The space is beautiful as it is."
The team did make minor changes to the bar area, so that Seaside could serve six draft beers and 12 wines on tap. The color scheme was slightly updated and the old tables were swapped out.
Goerke also said there are plans for more renovations, like dropping the bar floor to make it more inviting.
We also reached out to The Plant to find out why the spot had moved on, but it has not responded as of press time.
However, a statement posted to the restaurant's website states that the full-service Pier 3 and the Burlingame locations have both closed, though other locations in the Financial District, Dogpatch and the Marina remain open. It also hints that the restaurant may be changing gears.
"Our ten years at the Pier 3 location on the Embarcadero have been wonderful and we so appreciate the support of our community here," wrote the eatery. "We are moving to a quick-service concept for our restaurants in order to best provide 100% organic food to our community."
Seaside is open 11am–10pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am–10pm, weekends. Weekend brunch is 10am–3pm and happy hour is 3–6pm daily.
