A 37-year-old woman was fatally struck by a car driven by a man speeding away after an argument with another person in San Francisco's Candlestick Point area on Tuesday evening, police said.

The woman, identified by the medical examiner's office as San Francisco resident Xiuwei Liu, died after a collision reported at 7:02pm in the area of Harney Way and Executive Park Boulevard, according to police.

Police spokeswoman Officer Grace Gatpandan said the driver had been in an argument with someone else nearby, then got into his vehicle and sped away.

He then struck the sidewalk, trees, a light pole and ultimately the victim, Gatpandan said. Liu was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries and his name will not be released unless he is arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of criminal offenses, according to Gatpandan.

No other information about the case was immediately available from police.
