'Public Bikes' Shutters Hayes Valley Flagship

On Sunday, Public Bikes shuttered its Hayes Valley store at 549 Hayes St. (between Octavia and Laguna).

The move comes as the San Francisco-based bicycle company enters a retail partnership with Mike's Bikes, which boasts 12 retail stores throughout the Bay Area. The Hayes Valley showroom was Public's only fully branded retail location.

Public will continue to sell its bikes directly online, with the option to pick up fully assembled bicycles at Mike's Bikes or other partner bike shops. Customers can also go to Mike's Bikes for maintenance.

The folks at Public told us that it decided to close the store because Mike's Bikes already has a San Francisco presence.

"Since Mike’s Bikes already has a well-established San Francisco retail store at 1233 Howard Street in SoMa, we’ve closed our brick-and-mortar location in Hayes Valley," a spokesperson told us.

"Our Northern California customers draw from all over the region, so this partnership with Mike's Bikes allows them to purchase and pick up Public bikes in more convenient places, instead of just in the city in Hayes Valley. "

"Hayes Valley continues to be a vibrant mecca for independent retailers and creative food and drink establishments," the spokesperson added. "We’ve loved being a part of the Hayes Valley neighborhood."

Boutique retailer and Hayes Valley neighbor Lavish will move into the space from 508 Hayes and plans a mid-September re-opening.
