Sample a beer flight at Ale Industries
Oakland is home to some of the nations best craft breweries in the country so why not kick off your weekend with a flight of beer at Ale Industries (3096 E. 10th St.) Oakland's largest brewery, which debuted in 2009, is known for its casual atmosphere and refreshing beers, like East Bay IPA, Cherry Kush (a beer with cherry and coriander), and Uncle Jesse pale ale.
A tasting flight of six four-ounce pours, a pint glass and a T-shirt normally run $35, but Groupon is offering them for just $21. There's also a party package for up to 10 people that runs $121, or a little more than $12 per person—it includes a four-beer tasting flight and pint glass, as well as a brewery tour (but no shirt).
Punch up your weekend at Boxing For Health
Ever wondered if you could go toe-to-toe in a boxing ring? Pay a visit to Boxing For Health (452 Santa Clara Ave.) The locally owned gym offers a variety of boxing classes that it says promote weight loss, increased muscle tone, and mental toughness. Many of the trainers are former professional boxers, who'll give you plenty of tips on improving your jabs and hooks.
A 10-class pack, normally $121, is currently being offered on Groupon for $34. For longtime boxers, there's also a deal for 20 classes for $52 (normally $250). Just keep in mind that you'll either have to rent equipment or bring your own.
Enjoy Japanese food and live jazz at Yoshi's
For a fancy date night, check out Yoshi's Oakland in Jack London Square, which offers both Japanese food and live jazz. With 310 seats and a state-of-the-art sound system, you'll be able to hear every note, and the restaurant offers a full menu of sushi and cocktails for enjoying before or after a performance.
This Sunday night, singer-songwriter Bobby Caldwell ("What You Won't Do For Love") will take the stage. Tickets are normally $34, but Goldstar is offering them for just $22. (Keep in mind that there's a one-drink or one-food-item minimum.)
Take to the air at a circus class
If you've ever dreamed of attending clown college or flying on the trapeze, sign up for circus classes at Kinetic Arts Center (785 7th St.), which teaches Oakland locals the basics of everything from juggling to gymnastics to clowning. You can sign up for a tutorial in parkour or trapeze, and there are special classes for kids, too.
Curious folks can snag three circus classes for $64 (usually $114) or a five-class package for $110 (usually $190).
Catch a comedy show at Comedy Oakland
They say laughter is the best medicine—and if you could use a dose after a tough week of national news, Comedy Oakland's weekly stand-up showcase at Howden Restaurant & Bar (1628 Webster St.) is the place to go. Each show features a rotation of Bay Area up-and-comers, including Ira Summer, Angie Krass, Neel Nanda, Rebecca Arthur, and more.
Show prices are normally $12-16, but Goldstar has them for half-off. Two shows on Friday evening (7:30 and 9:30pm) are $7 each, and two shows at the same times on Saturday run $8. Best of all, there are no drink minimums or other additional charges that might bust your budget.
