Hayes Valley 'Wise Sons' Bagel Shop Slated To Open Oct. 31stPhoto: Wise Sons/Facebook

Wise Sons will open its fifth location at 537 Octavia St. (and Ivy) in the former Artís Coffee space, we reported in July. Now, the company has announced an opening date for October 31st.

The Hayes Valley space will be open seven days a week, from 8am to 3pm. Patrons can expect classics like boiled bagels and housemade shmears, smoked fish, and the hot pastrami toasted bagel sandwich with coleslaw.

There's also good news for fans of the former Hayes Valley coffee shop, as Wise Sons plans to serve Stumptown coffee, espresso and cold brew, as well as cold-brewed teas and juice.

In July, an Artis representative confirmed that the café's lease was sold to Wise Sons, which has offered to retain most of the staff.

In 2016, brothers and owners Evan and Ari Bloom—and their friend Leo Beckerman—opened their first bagelry at 1520 Fillmore St., four years after opening the flagship deli in the Mission at 3150 24th St.

With classic, wooden diamond patterns on the cabinetry and two Sputnik light fixtures, the new location pays homage to iconic Jewish delis. Inside, 20 stools will be available for patrons, and six more at outdoor tables.

The 700-square-foot space follows the clean and simple design of the other locations, with pale blue accents punctuating the black and white color palette.

Artist Amos Goldbaum—who painted a mural for the Fillmore bagelry and whose art can be found on the Wise Sons takeout coffee cups—has painted a mural on the north wall by the entrance of the new location. The mural features a playful take on the freeway that once ran through the neighborhood.
