After taking over Slider's Diner last year (449 Castro St. between Market and 18th), owner Ali Yaldiz has closed the burger joint to transform the restaurant into Park Gyros Castro.

"I know the Castro is a good place for business, and I have a lot of good friends who live in the neighborhood," Yaldiz said when he took over the two spaces.

Yaldiz, who also owns Castro Ice Cream next door,  as well as the Inner Sunset's Park Gyros and formerly owned Tuba Authentic Turkish Restaurant in the Mission.

Noting that "customers are not eating hamburgers like they did before," Yaldiz said the new eatery with lighter fare should do well on Castro Street.

"It's going to be delicious Mediterranean food with a variety of items like baklava, kebab and falafel," he said.

Park Gyros will be the area's fourth Mediterranean restaurant; Gyro Express is just down the street, Café Mystique is across Castro Street, and Le Mediterranee is located at 288 Noe St. (at Market).

Yaldiz is in the process of remodeling and anticipates finishing the work by the end of the year. If all goes to plan, he hopes to open on January 1.
