Two people suffered life-threatening injuries last night in separate hit-and-run collisions South of Market, according to police.

In the first incident, which took place at 12th and Folsom streets at 6:18pm, a 58-year-old man who was riding a bicycle was struck by a 37-year-old driver in a vehicle that was not described.

After making contact, the suspect got out of his vehicle and checked on the victim before fleeing the scene. The victim was transported to a hospital in critical condition, and police are still seeking the driver.

In the second collision, which happened at 7:45pm near 6th and Jessie streets, a driver who was making a turn struck a 59-year-old male who had fallen "to the ground with his body protruding into [the] street," according to police. 

The driver fled eastbound on Jessie Street, and the victim was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

According to the Department of Health, both incidents occurred on the city's high injury network, the 12 percent of surface streets where about 70 percent of pedestrian fatalities and injuries occur.
