The school year may be winding down, but high school varsity baseball bats are heating up, as teams vie to end their seasons on a high note.

There are only a handful of Los Angeles City Section games left to be played this season, and playoff spots are on the line.

Here’s a quick recap of some of yesterday’s clashes — and a look at more games coming up later this week.

Theodore Roosevelt bests South Gate 4-1

Although visitors South Gate High School managed to beat the Van Nuys Wolves over the weekend, the team wasn’t able to come up with another win on the road against the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Riders.

Playing in front of a home crowd, the Rough Riders, who are undefeated in league play, beat the Rams 4-1. Both teams started the matchup swinging, and the score was 2-1 going into the second inning. Roosevelt, however, batted in two more runs in the fourth inning and the Rams weren’t able to keep up.

With the loss, South Gate dropped to 14-9 on the season, while Roosevelt improved to 16-8.

South Gate will get another chance at the Rough Riders on Thursday, April 26, when the Rams will host Roosevelt. Then, on Saturday, South Gate will take on the struggling 3-10-1 Northridge Academy Pumas, while Roosevelt dukes it out with the in form 18-7 Banning Pilots.

San Fernando Tigers devour Van Nuys Wolves

They may have had home field advantage, but the Van Nuys Wolves were roundly walloped by the San Fernando Tigers 18-0.

The Tigers, who’ve played well on the road this season, have won four of their past five games. With yesterday’s trouncing of the Wolves, the team moves to 12-8-1 on the season. Even with a 6-1 league record, though, the team still trails the 7-0 Kennedy Cougars in Valley Mission play.

Van Nuys, on the other hand, slipped to a 6-12 record, going 4-6 so far in April.

The two teams will meet once again on Thursday, April 26, as the Wolves hunt for revenge against the Tigers at San Fernando High School.

Canoga Park Hunters seal comeback win over Reseda Regents

The Canoga Park Hunters secured a come-from-behind victory against the Reseda Regents yesterday. Things were tied 1-1 after the first inning; however, by the end of the fifth inning, the Regents had built a 4-1 lead. But the Hunters brought their rally caps, scoring two runs in the sixth to make things interesting before batting in both the tying and winning runs in the game’s final inning to take the encounter 5-4.

With the win, the Hunters snapped a three game losing streak and improved to 4-8 on the season. The Regents have now lost four straight, and the team hasn’t had a non-forfeit win since March 5.

The Regents, who are 0-6 in the Valley Mission League, will be looking both for revenge and their first league victory when they once again take on the Hunters on Thursday, April 26, at Reseda High School.
