Police responded to two gun-related incidents in the Bayview district overnight, including an attempted mugging in which suspects opened fire on a fleeing victim.

In the first incident, officers responded to the area of Bancroft Avenue and Keith Street around 3:30 a.m. after receiving a call that shots had been fired in the area. After arriving at the scene, police found bullet casings, but “no victims, suspects or witnesses.”

A half hour later, police were dispatched to a location near Rankin Street and Evans Avenue, about a mile and a half away, where a 26-year-old man had been wounded by gunfire.

According to the victim, two unknown male suspects confronted him and demanded his money. When he ran away, the suspects opened fire, causing him to suffer non-life-threatening wounds. The suspects fled the scene and were not arrested, and the victim was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Anyone who has information about either of these incidents is encouraged to contact SFPD via the department's anonymous tip line at 415-575-4444, or text TIP411 with "SFPD" at the start of the message.

Here’s why we usually don’t include suspect descriptions in crime reports.
