A popular ramen bar is expanding its reach with the opening of a new eatery in Forest Hills. Tamashii Ramen, at 71-34 Austin St., has two other New York City restaurants in Long Island City and Astoria.
The Queens eatery says it makes its soups fresh daily by simmering a whole chicken with vegetables for 14 hours, then adding in medicinal herbs.
The extensive menu features salads, appetizers and small plates like the pan-fried beef with shiitake mushrooms and the okonomiyaki, a Japanese-style pancake with cabbage, onion, shrimp and squid.
Go-to ramen dishes include the miso ramen, shio ramen with mineral salt and the spicy tantanmen with ground pork, bean sprouts, broccoli, bok choy and egg, along with vegetarian options. (Visit Tamashii Ramen's website for the full menu.)
On the drink list, look for saké, plum wine, soju, beer and tea.
Tamashii Ramen has gotten off to a solid start thus far, with a 3.5-star rating out of 35 reviews on Yelp.
Bryan C., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on May 19, wrote, "The ramen is good and really the star of the show. It is great that you can pick from one of three different types of ramen noodles (straight, wavy, thick). I've tried all of the soup bases, and I believe there is one for everyone. It is subjective, there are no losers here."
And Artem P. said, "Another great addition to Austin St. A few more places like this would be great. Very nice and attentive staff, quick service and great food."
