Two auto burglary suspects under surveillance by police in Golden Gate Park escaped arrest on Saturday night after they reportedly rammed a police car and fled the scene.

The incident took place around 11:30 p.m. near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive, where officers observed two male suspects breaking into a parked car.

When a plainclothes officer moved in to make an arrest, the suspects, one described as 18 to 20 years old and another in his early twenties, got into their vehicle and drove it into an unmarked police car. After the vehicles collided, the suspects fled the scene in their vehicle, which was not described.

The officer — who was still inside their vehicle at the time of the crash — was not injured, and the suspects successfully avoided arrest. 

According to Officer Robert Rueca of SFPD's Media Relations Unit, "we're investigating [this] as an intentional act. At the very least, it's an aggravated assault, with the potential of creating great bodily harm using a deadly weapon."
