Michigan Comic Con

Michigan Comic Con unfurls this weekend to the Cobo Center. Attendees will Enjoy a weekend full of comic books, toys, guest artists and celebrity appearances. 

When: Friday, August 17, 12 p.m.- Sunday, August 19, 5 p.m.
Where: Cobo Center, Hall C, 1 Washington Blvd.

Black history tour in the Cultural Center

Did you know that you can find some of the first black hospitals, music schools, fraternities and churches all in Detroit's Cultural Center Historic District? Join educator and historian Jamon Jordan on a free historic black-focused tour of the neighborhood, which includes the Detroit Institute of the Arts, Detroit Historical Museum, Michigan Science Center and much more.

When: Friday, August 17, 4-5:30 p.m.

Social Media Marketing Workshop

Looking to amp up your social media marketing skills? Facebook, Sisters Who Code and Grand Circus are teaming to offer a free workshop. Students will have the opportunity to earn four digital badges by developing a Facebook page and Instagram account for a local community organization or business of their choice. They'll then use those accounts to create awareness, drive traffic and attract customers, and create ad campaigns in support of the organization. Participants will simply register, bring a laptop and their lunch.

When: Saturday, August 18, 10 a.m.-Saturday, September 8, 2 p.m.

Vacant not Blighted Walking Tour

Presented by the Michigan Historic Preservation Network and the Detroit Land Bank Authority, Vacant not Blighted is a day of storytelling and history through a walking tour of vacated homes in Detroit's lower eastside. Attendees will learn about the neighborhood and its residents and connect with representatives from Brick+Beam to consider the realities of home buying and renovating.

When: Saturday, August 18; guided tours depart at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Kindred Music & Culture Festival

There's still time to snag tickets to Kindred Music & Culture Festival this Saturday. The festival's lineup features Payroll, Bevlove, Supakaine, Supercoolwicked, Wilie Mac Jr. and Monalyse. In addition to celebrating black musicians, but it will also feature various representations of black cuisine, beverages, product and service vendors, and activities.
