Castro's illy caffè has shuttered againPhoto: Denny G./Hoodline

Hoodline tipster Denny G. alerted us that the illy caffè at 2349 Market St. (between Noe and Castro) bid the neighborhood farewell, once again.

A sign posted on the cafe's doors informs customers that the Castro outpost's last day in business was Sunday, October 28. This location is now closed permanently, and its staff has reportedly moved to the Financial District illy at 220 Montgomery St.

As we reported last year, the Castro location first closed its doors in June 2017. Hoodline learned back then that illy acquired the space from a local operator more than two years 18 months prior, but business was not what the company had expected.

But then, in a surprising twist, illy reopened its doors as a "retail product-only" holiday pop-up shop, selling espresso and coffee machines, as well as single-serve and single-origin coffee.

Earlier this year, news arrived that the space transformed back into a full-service illy caffè, serving espresso drinks, pastries, snacks and to-go items.

No news yet on what's next for the Market Street space.
