Car crash into building leads to gas leak, evacuation in North Beach

At 2:41 p.m. on Monday afternoon, a car crashed into the garage of a home on the border of Russian Hill and North Beach.

Hoodline tipster Megan G. said that the vehicle "rolled backwards" before colliding with the house on the 700 block of Green Street (near Powell).

"It broke a gas line, and the gas tank of the car emptied onto the street," she said. "The block is closed off and people are being told to stay inside."

While it's not yet clear how the collision occurred, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Fire Department confirmed the gas leak in a tweet and said that the main line of the building has been shut off. No injuries have been reported, but building residents were evacuated as a precaution.

The SFFD spokesperson said that residents were allowed back into the building around 3:16 p.m. Department of Building Inspection personnel were dispatched to the scene to assess the damage.
