Food trends come and go. So how can you tell which tastes are trending right now?

We took a data-driven look at the question, using Yelp to deduce which eateries have been in the limelight this month.

To find out who made the list, we looked at San Jose businesses on Yelp by category and counted how many reviews each received. Rather than compare them based on number of reviews alone, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month, and tracked businesses that consistently increase their volume of reviews to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance.

Read on to see which spots are getting plenty of attention, right now.

Whether or not you've been hearing buzz about the Cambrian Park's iJava Cafe, the cafe and brunch spot, which offers coffee, crepes and more, is a hot topic according to Yelp review data.

While businesses categorized as "Breakfast & Brunch" on Yelp saw a median 1.6 percent increase in new reviews over the past month, iJava Cafe bagged a 7.1 percent increase in new reviews within that timeframe, maintaining a healthy 4.5-star rating. It significantly outperformed the previous month by gaining 2.1 times more reviews than expected based on its past performance.

Open at 3315 Almaden Expy since 2017, iJava Cafe offers a selection of breakfast burritos, lattes, acai bowls and more. Dig into signature dishes like the chilaquiles, made with beef chorizo, corn, queso fresco, sour cream, jalapeños, eggs and cilantro; or try a gourmet toast topped with honey, ricotta cheese and strawberries.

The Cambrian Park's Benedicts Café and Bar is the city's buzziest traditional American spot by the numbers.

The traditional American cocktail bar and breakfast and brunch spot, which opened at 5365 Camden Ave. in 2018, increased its new review count by 5.4 percent over the past month, an outlier when compared to the median new review count of 1.8 percent for the Yelp category "American (Traditional)."

It's not the only trending outlier in the traditional American category: Mesquite and Oak has seen a 4.5 percent increase in reviews.

Benedicts Café and Bar offers cheesecake waffles, blackberry pancakes, sweet potato scrambles and more. Also, look out for beverages like grapefruit juice, Mexican coffee and the strawberry mimosa.
