Here's a selection of crimes that have occurred in Hayes Valley and the Western Addition since our last roundup in early March. All reports were provided by SFPD, unless otherwise noted.

MAGA-hat wearing man severs man's hand with sword

A man has been hospitalized in life-threatening condition after being attacked by another man with a sword around 9:30 p.m. on March 29, outside the Church of 8 Wheels, the roller-skating rink at Fillmore and Fell streets.

According to police, the victim attempted to remove the suspect's hat, and the suspect responded by partially severing his left hand with the sword. While police would not confirm what was written on the hat, multiple witnesses said it was a "Make America Great Again" hat.

Teenager steals phone, injures woman

On March 27, a teenage boy (believed by police to be 15 or 16 years old) approached a 35-year-old woman near Geary and Laguna streets just before 6 p.m., snatching her phone from her hand.

As the woman struggled to recover her phone, she fell to the ground, sustaining minor injuries. The teenager fled the scene on foot with her phone, and has not been arrested. 

1 killed, 5 injured in shooting near Fillmore Heritage Center

A man was killed and five others were injured in a shooting at Fillmore and Ellis streets, near the Fillmore Heritage Center on March 23. One of the victims, a 27-year-old man, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Police later determined that three of the victims, including the man who passed away, were involved in the shooting. Two suspects were arrested.

Police recover shell casing after ShotSpotter activation

SFPD units responded to a ShotSpotter activation on the 1300 block of Buchanan Street (at Eddy) on March 19 at 1:50 a.m. Officers were able to recover a spent shell casing from the scene, but did not see any suspects.

Group of teenagers assaults man

A 24-year-old man was attacked by a group of teenagers at Larch and Laguna streets on March 15 around 11:30 p.m. Police did not specify the exact ages and genders of the teenagers, or the size of the group, but the victim sustained minor injuries. No arrests were made. 

Two men rob store at knifepoint

On March 4 at 9:45 p.m., two 30-year-old men entered a store on Van Ness Avenue (between Hayes and Market). They pulled out knives, which they brandished at two of the store's employees, a 52-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman.

One of the suspects jumped over the counter and took cash from the cash register; when the female employee ran out of the store, he then followed her and took her phone. Both suspects fled the scene, and neither of the victims sustained any injuries.

Northern Station monthly community meeting

Residents interested in learning more about crime and safety in the district are invited to attend SFPD Northern Station's community meetings, held at the station (1125 Fillmore St.) at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting is next Tuesday, April 9.
