In search of a new favorite Mexican spot?
Hoodline crunched the numbers to find the best affordable Mexican restaurants around San Jose, using both Yelp data and our own secret sauce to produce a ranked list of where to venture when cravings strike.
1. Mexico Bakery
Topping the list is Mexico Bakery. Located at 2811 Story Road in Capital Goss, the bakery and eatery, which offers sandwiches and more, is the highest-rated inexpensive Mexican restaurant in San Jose, boasting 4.5 stars out of 914 reviews on Yelp.
If you've got a big appetite and you stop by for lunch, Yelpers recommend ordering the Cubana torta, which is a sandwich with chorizo, eggs and a hot dog, or the Milaneza torta (breaded meat). The spot also serves other Mexican favorites like quesadillas, burritos and tamales.
Looking for something sweeter? Try the banana shake, the chocoflan or the pan dulce with custard.

2. 5 Spot Chivas Grill
Next up is Fairgrounds' 5 Spot Chivas Grill, situated at 869 S. First St. With four stars out of 102 reviews on Yelp, the Mexican spot has proven to be a local favorite for those looking for a budget-friendly option.
Yelpers rave about the homemade salsa and Taco Tuesday, when tacos are just $1. Order the al pastor, carne asada and the shredded chicken. Wash it all down with a michelada (spicy beer cocktail). The eatery also offers a full breakfast menu, as well as Mexican dinner plates with large portions of carnitas, sopes and enchiladas.
3. Tacos El Compa Taqueria
Cambrian Park's Tacos El Compa Taqueria, located at 1321 Blossom Hill Road, is another top choice, with Yelpers giving the affordable Mexican spot 4.5 stars out of 443 reviews.
The restaurant offers a wide selection of Mexican favorites like tacos, nachos, quesadillas and burritos. Menu standouts include the California burrito, which is stuffed with fries, and the jefecita taco, a cheesy crusted corn tortilla with cilantro, onion, avocado, sour cream and pico de gallo. Can't decide what kind of meat to order for your taco? Yelpers and the owners alike recommend the al pastor, which the business website says comes from the chef's family recipe.
4. Adelita's Taqueria Restaurant & Bar
Adelita's Taqueria Restaurant & Bar, a Mexican spot and cocktail bar in Cambrian Park, which also serves breakfast and brunch, is another high-traffic, cheap go-to, with four stars out of 1,235 Yelp reviews. Head over to 1896 Curtner Ave. to see for yourself.
On the menu, look for soups, salads, burritos, tacos, quesadillas and more. Hungry early birds will want to order the chorillana, which is scrambled eggs with a choice of meat, fried onions, french fries, guacamole and hot sauce. Dinner guests can dig into the enchilada and tamale with rice combination plate, glazed with Adelita’s special sauce and including beans, salsa fresca, spring mix and avocados.

5. Chavelas Restaurant
Over in Fairgrounds, check out Chavelas Restaurant, which has earned 4.5 stars out of 243 reviews on Yelp. Dig in at the Mexican spot by heading over to 960 S. First St.
The family-run restaurant serves up dishes like fajitas, burritos, tacos, nachos and more. Yelpers recommend the carne asada tacos, as well as the al pastor burrito. Vegetarian guests won't be disappointed with the chile relleno plate, featuring stuffed green bell peppers with cheese, rice, beans, sour cream and salad.
