Interested in adopting a pet — or just gazing at some delightful doggies? There are dozens of endearing dogs up for adoption at animal shelters in and around San Francisco.

Animal shelters work hard to care for unhoused pets and connect them to loving homes. Hoodline used data from Petfinder to power this roundup of dogs currently available for adoption.

(Details like pet availability, training, vaccinations and other features are based on data provided by Petfinder and may be subject to change; contact the shelter for the latest information.)

Ozzy, Poodle mix

Ozzy is a sweet male poodle mix staying at Grateful Dogs Rescue.

Ozzy is eager to make friends — he gets along well with children, dogs or cats. His vaccinations are up to date, and he's neutered. He is already house-trained.

Here's what Ozzy's friends at Grateful Dogs Rescue think of him:

Ozzy is excited to greet everyone he meets, human or canine, and makes friends wherever he goes. He loves to be out and about, but is just as happy at home, curled up next to you or under your feet. His ideal situation would be one in which he could accompany you to the office, where he will be a perfect gentleman, or one in which there is someone at home most of the time. He would be his best self with moderate to lots of daily exercise, and is very responsive on a retractable leash.

Bubu, Corgi and Shepherd mix

Bubu is an adorable 5-year-old male corgi and shepherd mix currently residing at Asians for Humans Animals and Nature.

Bubu will get along great with your other dogs. His ideal forever home would be a cat-free environment. His vaccinations are up to date, and he's neutered. He's already house-trained.

More about Bubu:

My foster mom and dad are very nice to me. The only thing that troubles me is I do not know how to socialize with other foster dogs. Without experience to meet other dogs before, many times I misunderstood if they were friendly or aggressive. So, I became a little alpha to protect myself in the new place. After few weeks passed. I finally realized my foster siblings are all friendly. I started to make friends with some of them but am still hesitant to open my heart to all of them because some dogs like to steal my food when I’m eating; that makes me unhappy. I’m gentle when meeting children, but scared of the young ones to pet me suddenly from the back or pull my tail. For adults, I like them to touch my head gently. That makes me feeling relaxed. I understand I need to enhance my sociability with other creatures. So, I am here hoping to find an experienced family that is willing to embrace my imperfection. I have a clean bill of health and now looking for a loving home.

Simba, Smooth Collie and Mountain Dog mix

Simba is a handsome male smooth collie and mountain dog mix being cared for at Asians for Humans Animals and Nature.

Simba is vaccinated and neutered. He's mastered his house-training etiquette.

Simba's current caretakers say:

Meet sweet and dashing Simba, neutered male, 3.5 years old, 42 pounds. When we first time met Simba, he was very timid. He didn’t trust anyone and always stayed a distance to observe you. After weeks of acclimation, Simba gradually came out of his shell and started to accept his foster siblings’ friendship. Since then, he has been doing well and become confident and cuddly. Simba is selective to dogs. When he meets the dogs he likes, he is truly a happy player. Simba is very friendly and sweet to children. He might be a little shy to meet strangers in the beginning but warms up quickly if there is some treat involved.

Trevor, Chihuahua and Papillon mix

Trevor is a male chihuahua and papillon mix currently residing at Grateful Dogs Rescue.

Trevor loves other dogs. Grateful Dogs Rescue, however, recommends he be placed in a home without small children. Trevor is neutered, and he has all his shots. He has mastered his house-training etiquette.

Trevor's current caretakers say:

Trevor is a year and a half old and weighs less than five pounds. He is very thin and probably should weigh more, but eating doesn't interest him much. He loves to cuddle and give kisses. He likes to play with squeaky toys and run zoomies in the backyard. He is very interested in other dogs. He enjoys his walk, never barking at anyone, and enjoys meeting dogs as long as there aren't too many at one time. Trevor is looking for an adult-only home. He would probably do fine with another dog, or as an only dog. Trevor seems to prefer women, but just takes a bit longer to warm up to men.

Mallory, Shih Tzu mix

Mallory is a charming female Shih Tzu mix being kept at Wonder Dog Rescue.

Mallory loves other dogs. She's already house-trained. Mallory is already spayed, and she has all her shots. Mallory is a special needs pet, so please inquire about her specific care requirements.

Mallory's current caretakers say:

Mallory (Mimi) is an 8-year-old Shih Tzu mix. Mimi is the sweetest little angel. She gets along with all dogs, humans, kids, basically anyone and anything. She is partially blind, but this does not seem to bother her at all. She is super mellow, easygoing and has low energy. Mimi likes to hang out and be around people. I can always find her next to me — listening to my voice or napping. She is great on a leash, but prefers to walk very slowly unless there is another dog leading the way. She will follow the sound of footsteps or your voice. All she wants to do is cuddle with you and love you. She deserves the world!

Josie, Labrador retriever

Josie is a darling 6-year-old female Labrador retriever dog staying at Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Rescue.

Have no fear: She is already house-trained. She already has all of her shots, and she is spayed.

Here's what Josie's friends at Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Rescue think of her:

Josie likes routine. She starts the day with a ball in her mouth and demands (by barking) for one — 10 rounds of fetch. Next comes breakfast (she’s a good eater) and another round of fetch (she can be demanding). Small children are probably not a good idea due to her strength and size. She enjoys the company of her humans and would do well as an only dog and maybe with another dog; it would have to be the right match as Josie gets a little growly having to share her human. Medical Information: Josie is current on vaccinations, heartworm negative, microchipped, and spayed.
