Pedestrian dies after being struck by Golden Gate Transit bus driver in the Tenderloin

A 66-year-old pedestrian was killed at Hyde Street and Golden Gate Avenue around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, after being struck by the driver of a Golden Gate Transit bus.

District 6 Supervisor Matt Haney said the man was a Tenderloin resident who lived on McAllister Street.

San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) spokesperson Sgt. Michael Andraychak told Hoodline that police responded to the scene at around 7:30 p.m. The victim was rushed to a hospital in life-threatening condition, where he "unfortunately succumbed to his injuries," Andraychak said.

The incident is now being investigated by the SFPD's Traffic Collision Investigation Unit.

Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District spokesperson Priya Clemens, whose agency oversees Golden Gate Transit buses, told Hoodline that it appears the man crossed the street in front of the bus.

"After [the pedestrian] crossed the street, the bus turned onto Hyde Street," she said. "The pedestrian fell backwards and hit his head on the bus, and then on the ground."

Clemens said that the bus driver underwent drug and alcohol testing as part of the investigation, and has been placed on administrative leave until it's resolved.

The intersection of Hyde Street and Golden Gate Avenue has also been identified as a high-injury corridor under the city's Vision Zero plan, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2024.

In the wake of the incident, Sup. Haney noted that the Tenderloin already has a traffic safety task force, but said "we need to move faster."

"The Tenderloin has some of the most dangerous streets in the city, and is home to many seniors, kids [and] people with disabilities," he said on Twitter. "I’m calling for turn signals on both Golden Gate and Hyde, similar to what we have on Golden Gate and Leavenworth. Let’s get it done. This intersection is incredibly unsafe on all sides."
