The weekend is kicking off early in Oakland, with Fourth of July festivities and a block party at Jack London Square. But that's not all: while you’re at it, check out a dog show, a science night themed around the moon and an art exhibition.
Fourth of July Block Party at Jack London Square
Thousands of Oaklanders will head to Jack London Square for its annual July 4 block party, featuring live musicians spanning numerous genres. Performers will include R&B group Midtown Social, upbeat indie rockers Carpool Tunnel, Latin-inspired Mestiza, rapper Heno and more. DJs, food and drink vendors and a community stage will also be in the mix.

Cavaliers of the West Dog Show
Can't get enough of cute Cavalier King Charles spaniels? Oakland is planning an all-Cavalier dog show this weekend — and it's not your average pedigree competition. Expect to see groups from puppies to senior dogs get their day in the sun, along with trick competitions, seminars on health and a "rescue parade" for dogs that have been rehomed.

Lunar First Friday at Chabot Space & Science Center
For the entire month of July, the Chabot Space & Science Center will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing with a series of special lunar-themed events. First Friday will feature a DJ and dance party in the courtyard, a moon exhibit in the Astronomy Hall, a presentation about the sky in the planetarium, a sneak preview of the PBS documentary “Chasing The Moon," a laser show and more.

'Golgatha at Classic Cars West
On Saturday night, Classic Cars West — the small vintage car dealership which also serves as an art gallery and vegan restaurant — will host the opening reception for artist Dani Robison's new exhibition "Golgatha." Robison uses sculptural stained glass to express issues of dysphoria and mental illness, with highly personal additions like smashed liquor bottles, saliva and underwear.
