Oakland weekend: Blues cruise on the Bay, vinyl record fair, Asian-American theater show, more

The weather is expected to be pleasant this weekend — but whether you want to stay indoors or outdoors, we have a roundup of events that will satisfy your needs. Check out a show from up-and-coming young actors, a documentary about fearless female cyclists in Afghanistan, or an afternoon cruise with live blues. 

'Let’s Unpack That'

BAD Repertory Theatre, which works primarily with Asian-American artists, is taking over the Flight Deck this weekend for its fourth annual summer show. Expect an eclectic mix of one-act plays, folktales, short films, and sketch comedy, written by and starring a young, up-and-coming group of performers. 

When: Thursday - Saturday, August 15 - 17, 7:30 p.m.

Afghan Cycles Documentary & reception at OACC

Bicycles had a strong impact on the American women's suffrage movement, and they're now a key part of the fight for women's rights in Afghanistan. That struggle is depicted in the new documentary "Afghan Cycles," which follows a new generation of women determined not to let poor infrastructure, sexism or even death threats keep them from cycling. Tomorrow night's screening of the 90-minute film will be followed by a reception.

Shifting Plates: An East Bay Record Fair

Vinyl has exploded onto the music scene once again, and record collectors can head to Classic Cars West to snap up LPs both old and new from the top music shops in town. Over 30 vendors will be in attendance, and the DJ-led dance party (starting at 4 p.m.) will last into the night, with plenty of food and mezcal cocktails to hold you over.

Sunday Blues on the USS Potomac

The historic USS Potomac, once Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Floating White House," is setting sail for blues cruise this weekend with an appearance from the Charlie Wade Blues Band. All ages are welcome aboard for a two-hour concert on the Bay, complete with stunning views.

When: Sunday, August 18, 3 - 5 p.m.
