Food trends come and go. So how can you tell which tastes are trending today?

We took a data-driven look at the question, using Yelp to uncover which eateries have been getting extra notice this month.

To find out who made the list, we looked at San Jose businesses on Yelp by category and counted how many reviews each received. Rather than compare them based on number of reviews alone, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month, and tracked businesses that consistently increased their volume of reviews to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance.

Social Lady

Open since 2018, this bar and New American spot is trending compared to other businesses categorized as "Bars" on Yelp.

Citywide, bars saw a median 1.1% increase in new reviews over the past month, but Social Lady saw a 16% increase, with a slight downward trend from a four-star rating a month ago to 3.5 stars today. Moreover, on a month-to-month basis Social Lady's review count increased by more than 130%.

It's not the only trending outlier in the bar category: Ozumo Santana Row has seen a 11% increase in reviews, and Miniboss and Giorgio's Italian Food & Pizzeria have seen 7.5 and 1.6% increases, respectively.

Located at 73 E. San Fernando St. in downtown San Jose, Social Lady serves small bites like beef sliders, ceviche and fried avocado shrimp tempura. It also offers larger meals like the pesto chicken pasta and the lamb chops, alongside a variety of specialty cocktails.

Sushi Arashi

Whether or not you've been hearing buzz about North Willow Glen / Gardner's Sushi Arashi, the popular sushi bar is a hot topic according to Yelp review data.

While businesses categorized as "Sushi Bars" on Yelp saw a median 1.3% increase in new reviews over the past month, Sushi Arashi bagged an 8.7% increase in new reviews within that time frame, maintaining a sound 4.5-star rating.

There's more that's trending on San Jose's sushi bar scene: Sushi Koya has seen a 5.9% increase in reviews, and Sanraku has seen a 4.4% bump.

The sushi spot has been open at 1181 Lincoln Ave. since 2017. In addition to an array of sushi rolls, Sushi Arashi offers bento boxes and such entrees as salmon teriyaki, chicken katsu and Asian-style barbecue short ribs.

Downtown San Jose's Mariscos Costa Alegre is also making waves. Open since 2017 at 855 13th St., the popular Mexican spot, which offers seafood and more, has seen an 8.2% bump in new reviews over the last month, compared to a median review increase of 1.5% for all businesses tagged "Seafood" on Yelp.

Mariscos Costa Alegre features a seafood-centric menu, serving shrimp cocktails, sushi rolls, tostadas and ceviche. Tacos and burritos are also on the menu, with a choice of fish, shrimp, chicken or asada. Over the past month, it's maintained a convincing 4.5-star rating among Yelpers.

Mariscos Costa Alegre is open from 10 a.m.–9 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. on Tuesday, 10 a.m.–10 p.m. on Friday, 9:30 a.m.–10 p.m. on Saturday and 9:30 a.m.–9 p.m. on Sunday.

Rosie McCann's Irish Pub & Restaurant

Winchester North's Rosie McCann's Irish Pub & Restaurant is the city's buzziest breakfast and brunch spot by the numbers.
