New SoMa Japanese spot Donburi Ya opens its doorsPhoto: Donburi Ya/Yelp

A new fast-casual Japanese spot has opened up shop in SoMa. Called Donburi Ya, the new arrival is located at 764 Harrison St. (between Third and Fourth streets), the former home of Soma Sushi.

This counter-service spot offers donburi (Japanese rice bowls) for dine-in and takeaway. Choose from one of six signature bowls ($12-14), like the slow-cooked pork cartilage bowl, the poke-style salmon bowl and the mapo tofu bowl.

Diners can also build their own rice bowls, with a choice of toppings like katsu chicken, beef, salmon, soft-boiled egg, kimchi, mixed veggies and more. Sides include miso soup, edamame, gyoza and seaweed salad.

For dine-in customers, Donburi Ya also offers beer, wine and big-screen TVs showing sports.

With a 3.5-star rating out of six reviews on Yelp so far, Donburi Ya is finding its way, but it's still early days for the newcomer.

Darren C., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on Sept. 14, wrote, "Food quality is great for the price in this area."

Meanwhile, Yelper Julie Y. added, "I decided on the mapo tofu, and with the check-in offer, I also got some free takoyaki. Honestly, I was hoping for some more flavor in the mapo tofu, I felt like it was lacking something."

Head on over to check it out: Donburi Ya is open from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. and 5–9 p.m. on Monday-Saturday. (It's closed on Sunday.)
