Here's the latest in SF food news. In this edition, a new restaurant is headed to the former Kaya space in Mid-Market, a dumpling spot plots a move to Hayes Valley, and a new vegan Filipino eatery debuts in SoMa.

Mid-Market

A new tenant may be moving into the former Kaya spot at 1420 Market St. (at 11th St.)

A restaurant under the name Yakiniku Shodai has a pending application with the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) for a beer and wine license.

The space has been empty since Kaya, a partnership between chef Nigel Jones (of Oakland’s Kingston 11) and Daniel Patterson’s Alta Group, closed in May after 16 months in business.

While we don’t have additional information about the new restaurant’s plans, such as opening dates or menus, it will likely include bite-sized meat — yakiniku commonly refers to a Japanese style of cooking meat and vegetables over wood-charcoal flames.

We will provide updates about Yakiniku Shodai when more information becomes available.

Dumpling Home (not to be confused with Dumpling House) will be moving into Hayes Valley, if all goes as planned.

Tipster Derek W. alerted Hoodline that an application has been filed with the ABC for a beer and wine eating place by the Liu Chen Corporation. The space is the former Bai Thong Thai spot, which closed in December 2018 after eight years in business.

Stay tuned for more about the Dumpling Home and its plans in Hayes Valley.

SoMa

Nick's on Mission (996 Mission St.)

On November 1, Nick’s on Mission opened its doors at 996 Mission St. (at Sixth Street), according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The space was formerly home to Chinese restaurant Spicy Garden.

The Filipino eatery is 100% plant-based, offering vegan interpretations of dishes such as pancit, lumpia, sisig, and kaldereta, as well as sweets like leche flan and ube pancakes.

This will be the third outpost for owners Reina Montenegro and partner Kenny Annis. Montenegro and Annis' first restaurant, Nick’s Kitchen, opened in Daly City in 2017, and their second, Nick’s on Grand, opened in South San Francisco in 2018.

Nick's on Mission is a "turo turo" (Tagalog for "point point") restaurant, meaning all the food is on display, buffet-style. For the time being, there's no seating, so all food has to be taken to go. Hours are Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. to start, with plans to expand to 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
