First, sushi spot Gaijin, which shuttered this past summer after three years in business, has relaunched as the more upscale, omakase-focused Koyo.

At the revamped restaurant, which is under old ownership but helmed by a new chef, diners can choose from two kinds of omakase (tasting menu) experiences: a sushi omakase featuring 12 pieces of nigiri ($135 per person) and a kaiseki omakase, which includes seasonal small plates in addition to nigiri ($175 per person). The intimate spot, which has room for 18 guests, offers seatings at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

With a five-star rating out of 20 reviews on Yelp, Koyo has been getting very positive attention.

Yelper Dimitrios D., who reviewed Koyo on Jan. 4, wrote, "The restaurant is tasting menu only at this point. You can of course tell the server or chef if you have a dietary restriction, which they will accommodate, though. The menu is a mix of cooked foods and sushi. All in all, just a great place!"

Patrick W. noted, "Koyo gave me a culinary experience equal to or greater than some of the more established sushi restaurants we've tried in Manhattan."

Koyo offers dinner seatings at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesday-Sunday. (It's closed on Monday and Tuesday.)

If you've got an appetite, Viva Viva Taqueria offers six kinds of tacos, including al pastor, carne asada and spicy shrimp, as well as quesadillas, guac and, for dessert, flan.

Viva Viva Taqueria currently holds four stars out of 23 reviews on Yelp, indicating good reviews.

Yelper S C., who reviewed the new spot on Dec. 28, wrote, "Delicious. Loved everything: the margaritas, veggie taco, shrimp taco, al pastor taco, guac and the steak quesadilla."

Viva Viva Taqueria is open from 4 p.m.–2 a.m. daily.

Last but not least, after losing its Manhattan lease in 2018, pizzeria Nonnas 1977 decided to move across the East River, setting up a new, rock 'n' roll-themed pizza shop in Astoria in August of last year.

Like the Lower East Side original, which had been in business for nearly a decade, the new spot serves the same, self-described "magic pies" — handmade, rectangular-shaped pan pizzas topped with homemade mozzarella. Check out the Gloria, featuring sausage, roasted peppers and wild mushrooms; the Sweet Caroline, with pear, Gorgonzola and walnuts; and the Mrs. Robinson, with soppressata, feta cheese, artichokes and olives. Pizzas are available by the pie and by the slice. The restaurant also serves pasta, salads, sides and a selection of "parms."

Nonnas 1977 currently holds five stars out of 43 reviews on Yelp, indicating excellent reviews.

Yelper Marina C. noted, "The pizza is fantastic here. Ingredients are fresh. I had the Proud Mory slice."

Nonnas 1977 is open from 11 a.m.–11 p.m. on Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m.–1:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
