New Crown Heights vegan Ethiopian spot Ras Plant Based opens its doorsPhoto: Giovanni R./Yelp

A new vegan Ethiopian restaurant has made its debut in the neighborhood. The new addition to Crown Heights, called Ras Plant Based, is located at 739 Franklin Ave.

Opened by husband-and-wife duo Romeo and Milka Regalli, who met while working at Cobble Hill's Awash, Ras Plant Based serves up plant-based, farm-to-table renditions of traditional Ethiopian fare. Check out the tibs made with mushrooms, tofu or sauteed seitan; the sambusas filled with your choice of lentils or squash; and salads like the tomato fitfit, all served with traditional Ethiopian injera bread (gluten-free injera is available, too). Or try one of the two different combo platters, with five different veggie dishes on a sheet of injera.

The 65-person restaurant also boasts colorful custom murals and a bar that will eventually offer a full drink list — the bar is currently mixing up a selection of mocktails, while the restaurant awaits its liquor license.

The business has proved to be popular thus far, with a five-star rating out of four reviews on Yelp.

Giovanni R., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on March 8, wrote, "What an incredible spot. Heavy-hitting flavors and textures, with the right amount of variety and options. Not to mention, the space itself!"

Yelper Chris L. added, “It was all fantastic and the service was excellent."

Interested? Ras Plant Based is open from 11 a.m.–11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.–midnight on Friday, 10 a.m.–midnight on Saturday and 10 a.m.–11 p.m. on Sunday.
