Oakland weekend, postponed: Sports games & concerts cancelled due to COVID-19

This weekend, Oakland will be a little less lively. While there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Oakland as of Friday afternoon, city officials declared a state of emergency on Wednesday, banning events with more than 1,000 people at all city-owned facilities. Large events at the Fox Theater, Paramount Theater, Oakland Convention Center, and the Oakland Arena and Coliseum are cancelled until March 31.

That means some big events for this weekend are cancelled. Here's a short roundup, along with links to event rescheduling and refund information.

Oakland Panthers Inaugural Season Rally and Opening Night at Oakland Arena

The Bay Area's newest professional football team, the Oakland Panthers, planned to have their inaugural season rally Thursday in Frank Ogawa Plaza, but it's now cancelled due to COVID-19 precautions.

The March 14 opening game against the Iowa Barnstormers will still take place at the Oakland Arena on Saturday, but without a live audience. The game will be broadcast on KBCW-44 on TV and on the radio on KNBR 1050.

Prince Royce - Alter Ego Tour

Award-winning Latin pop artist Prince Royce's appearance at the Paramount Theater on Friday night has been postponed.

According to the Paramount theater website, fans should hang on to their tickets for now: "We will announce the rescheduled date as soon as possible and all tickets purchased for the March 13 concert will be honored on the rescheduled date," a statement on the website said.

Umphrey's McGee at Fox Theater

Indiana rock band Umphrey's McGee will not be playing live at Fox Theater on Saturday night. According to the Fox Theater website, the show has been rescheduled for September 12, 2020.

This band is known for its crossover appeal by creating music outside of the box of rock. They play music infused with jazz, blues, electronic, reggae and more.
