Topping the list is Tenoch Mexican. Located at 3 Lewis St. in North End, it is the highest-rated affordable Mexican restaurant in Boston, boasting 4.5 stars out of 316 reviews on Yelp.

Yelper Huy-Alex N., who reviewed Tenoch Mexican on March 7, wrote, "The tortas, which are basically sandwiches that run around $8-$10, are massive and stuffed with meat, cheese and other toppings that complement each other very well. I got the Tenoch torta the first time and the carnitas one the next time. Both great, with bursts of flavor with each bite."

Yelper Erika C. wrote, "Great burritos and guac. If you are looking for amazingly fresh, authentic Mexican for an affordable price, stop in here."

2. El Pelón Taquería

Fenway's El Pelón Taquería, located at 92 Peterborough St., is another top choice, with Yelpers giving the spot four stars out of 1,109 reviews.

If you're curious for more, we found these details about El Pelón Taquería.

"We only use the freshest ingredients from the right sources," according to the business's Yelp profile. "We prepare every meal made to order, and we make sure it's made the way you want it. No matter what you order, we promise your meal will be top quality and packed with a genuine Mexican flavor."

Curious about who's behind the business?

"Jim Hoben, owner and founder of El Pelon Taqueria in Boston, has made it a point to incorporate the notion of community into all aspects of his life," the business says on Yelp. "After bartending and working as a cook for many years both locally and abroad in his 20s, Jim returned to Massachusetts to try his hand at restaurant management in the 90s."

As to what the business is known for, "We offer authentic Mexican food prepared in our kitchen daily, using only the freshest ingredients, the same way we've been doing for over 18 years," it states on Yelp. "Our taqueria offers more than just the ordinary tacos and burritos. Make sure not to miss the ever-popular 'El Guapo' burrito made with grilled steak, rice, black beans, fried plantains, jack cheese and our in-house-made fire-roasted salsa."

3. Taqueria Jalisco

Taqueria Jalisco in East Boston is another much-loved, cheap go-to, with 4.5 stars out of 319 Yelp reviews. Head over to 291 Bennington St. to see for yourself.

Yelper Adam P., who reviewed Taqueria Jalisco on Jan. 4, wrote, "I have to say, these tacos were better than any tacos I had in Mexico. They were full of juicy, flavorful meat (I had one chicken, one steak and one marinated pork) and topped with cilantro and onion. The steak was my favorite, but they were all good."

Howie H. noted, "I ordered the fillet of fish, large menudo soup and a horchata. The filet offish was not breaded, and I believe deep fried. It was perfectly cooked, mild in flavors and very tasty. The menudo was flavorful, slightly spicy, and it's definitely a warm comfort soup. There were generous pieces of tripe in the soup."

4. Los Amigos Taqueria

Finally, there is Brighton's Los Amigos Taqueria, situated at 366 Washington St. With 3.5 stars out of 84 reviews on Yelp, it has proved to be a local favorite for those looking for an affordable option.

Yelper Shaun D., who reviewed Los Amigos Taqueria on Feb. 15, wrote, "This place never fails me. If it's your first time here, I'd recommend the California burrito or the over-easy burrito."

Andy L. noted, "The first time I came here, I was immediately drawn to order the Surf and Turf burrito. It is literally the perfect burrito. My girlfriend and I have also tried the fish taco, which was also delicious."
