Interested in adopting a pet — or just taking a peek at some lovable pups up for adoption? There are dozens of darling dogs up for adoption at animal shelters in and around San Francisco.

Animal shelters and pet rescue groups work hard to care for unhoused pets and connect them to loving homes. Hoodline used data from Petfinder to power this roundup of dogs currently available for adoption.

(Details like pet availability, training, vaccinations and other features are based on data provided by Petfinder and may be subject to change; contact the shelter for the latest information.)

Lagatha, chihuahua

Lagatha is a winsome female chihuahua dog currently housed at Fairy Tails.

Lagatha gets along well with other dogs. Fairy Tails, however, thinks she will do best in a home without small children. Have no fear: She is already house-trained, spayed and has had all her shots.

From Lagatha's current caretaker:

Lagatha is a happy and brave girl who has come a long way. She was found as a stray and bounced around shelters, until she finally got into a foster home. At first, she was scared and shy, but, in time, she blossomed with confidence and trust. She became house-trained, socialized with other dogs and gained more fat and muscle on her body. She is now a healthy and happy dog ready to embrace life. Lagatha loves to play with little dogs and with people. She is a hardcore snuggler and likes to lie on your lap when you're hanging out. She's currently living with two small dogs and is used to having a lot of dogs around, as her caretakers are in the dog-care business. Lagatha responds well to training but is sometimes known to guard her toys. For this reason, we don't deem her suitable for a home with children.

Dexter, German shepherd and husky mix

Dexter is a handsome male German shepherd and husky mix being cared for at Welcome Home Sanctuary.

Dexter is the life of the party — he's happy to keep company with other dogs. He is already neutered and vaccinated. Have no fear: Dexter is already house-trained.

From Dexter's current caretaker:

Dexter is a 2.5-3 year-old goofy, affectionate gentle giant. He's playful, smart, inquisitive, fun and spunky. He's great with kids and all dogs. Dexter loves his dog park time, so we are looking for a person who likes to go to them. He's a big guy, weighing in at about 100 pounds, and his leash skills could use some polish. He's still a big puppy, so we are looking for a home either with children over 8 years of age or a child-free household. Dexter is a typical GSD in that he is protective of his home. He may bark at your guests upon arrival but settles down quickly. He's treat-motivated, so that's something that can be worked on.

Oslo, husky

Oslo is a darling male husky dog staying at Welcome Home Sanctuary.

Oslo is happy to keep company with other dogs. He is neutered and has had all his shots.

Here's what Oslo's friends at Welcome Home Sanctuary think of him:

Oslo is a crowd favorite. At 1.5 years old, he's a 50-pound hunk of puppy love. He's sweet as pie, fun-loving and very energetic but can relax when you need him to. He's happy-go-lucky, affectionate, good with kids and loves car rides and other dogs. What more could you want? Please note: We will be placing Oslo in a home with children over the age of 8.

George, chihuahua and dachshund mix

George is an adorable male chihuahua and dachshund mix staying at Family Dog Rescue.

Here's what George's friends at Family Dog Rescue think of him:

George is a sweet boy who's entering his golden years, but he can still can keep up playing with puppies and is so ready for new adventures. He loves cuddles, belly rubs and meeting new people. He enjoys going out in a dog stroller, since he absolutely refuses to walk on a leash; however, he does love to run around in his foster family's backyard with his foster brothers. George is still fearful of strangers and needs slow introductions, but, with time, he will begin to trust and become a beautiful social pup.
