Mayor London Breed announced Friday that enforcement for parking violations related to street sweeping will resume next Monday, June 15.

As we reported at the beginning of shelter-in-place, tickets for street cleaning issued on March 17 were waived after a public outcry. Enforcement has not resumed since.

While the City still encouraged people to move their vehicles if they could, street sweeping crews from San Francisco Public Works continue to see a large number of vehicles failing to do so, as many as 18,000 per day.

"Now as we’re reopening, we’ve reached the point where we must resume parking enforcement so that we can clean our streets," Breed said in the statement. "We’ll of course continue waiving tickets for people who face issues related to COVID-19."

SFMTA spokesperson Erica Kato told Hoodline that citation protests can be submitted online. They must include documentation that someone is over 60, or include a health care provider letter indicating that the person is "part of a vulnerable population or have been instructed to quarantine/isolate."

SFMTA director of transportation Jeffrey Tumlin said that "now is the right time to ensure our streets are clean and ready to support economic activity" as "more businesses open up and more residents return to work." 

Current reopening plans allow for indoor retail to resume next Monday, along with outdoor dining for restaurants and bars serving food. Additionally, offices can reopen for those who can't work from home.

"Our mechanical sweeping crews have not been able to do as thorough a job cleaning, resulting in more litter and leaves on the streets," acting Public Works director Alaric Degrafinried added.

According to Public Works' website, residential streets are usually cleaned weekly or twice per month, streets in commercial areas once per week. Street sweeping schedules can be viewed online.
