An already established bakery is making its new storefront debut this week in the Mission District. Fox and Lion Bread started serving from its dedicated new space at 3350 18th Street at Capp Street on Wednesday, March 29th. Baker Xan Devoss has been selling her much-loved loaves of sourdough bread from a pick-up location on Haight Street for nine years. Devoss also used a shared kitchen in the Bay View to make her Fox and Lion creations for the past seven years, but she outgrew that space.

Branching out to the new space has been a challenge, but Devoss believes the process she uses to make her sourdough loaves, which uses a natural French technique with a warm starter — a levain — instead of a more traditional cold starter, will set Fox and Lion apart from the other bakeries in the Mission, like Arizmendi or Tartine. “You can have a baker on every corner. And each one will taste completely different. My bread and my philosophy is a vehicle for connection in the city,” Devoss tells Eater

The new Fox and Lion Bread location will offer a menu with bagels, pizzas, salads, sandwiches, soups, and more. Devoss is hoping to keep her prices in the $10 to $20 range while selling her sourdough loves for around $7. Coffee will also be a staple in the new space. Devoss will be selling roasts from Proyecto Diaz in San Leandro. The interior of the space features a bright red counter and huge windows that will be perfect for watching the foot traffic as you sip your coffee.

On the outside of the space, you’ll notice a new mural by painter Pablito, which shows a little girl surrounded by sunflowers and poppies. Devoss is pretty handy when it comes to construction work, thanks to the renovation experience she got at her previous space in the Bay View. She has also been getting help from friends to fix up the new location. “I’m not waiting for a contractor, you know? A lot of people have helped me. A friend of mine came and helped me dig all the floors for the plumbing,” Devoss told Mission Local.

An open house will be held on March 31st from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Regular hours will be Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Friday/Saturday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Fox and Lion will also be making its regular appearances at Mission Mercado on 22nd Street on Thursdays from 3 pm to 7 pm. Devoss will also still be doing the bread pickup service on Haight Street that she used to launch her company.
