The spiny lobster season in California has begun, and the Tuna Harbor Dockside Market is preparing for its 4th annual Lobsterfest on October 8. The event, which features live music, Antarctic lobster sales and scrumptious lobster-based dishes, is organized by the San Diego Fishermen's Working Group to celebrate local fisheries, according to There San Diego.
Close to a dozen local fishermen will be selling California's famed spiny lobster at Lobsterfest 2023. The event is more than a seafood extravaganza; it also serves, to bolster San Diego's maritime heritage and economy, says Ticket Tailor.
The event, open to the public for free, commences at 8 AM at Market Pier, located at 598 Harbor Ln, San Diego, CA 92101. Attendees are advised to arrive early as whole lobsters and lobster meals often sell out quickly. Along with lobsters and live music, mouth-watering dockside lobster dishes by the renowned Chef Marcus Twilegar can be found, whose culinary skills have been displayed in local popular spots like Palmy’s Pacific Beach and Parq.
California spiny lobsters are popularly known for, their sweeter meat compared to their East Coast counterparts. Lacking the claws their Eastern counterparts have, their succulent tail meat is suitable for grilling or steaming, and definitely worth tasting.
Spiny lobster season in California, from early October to mid-March each year, is opened with the Lobsterfest, allowing seafood fans to savor delicious maritime cuisine. Last year's attendees consumed a total of 1,193 lbs of lobster, sold by six local fishing families, and enjoyed watching the preparation and tasting of 280 dishes by Chef Marcus Twilegar. This year, nine local lobster fishermen are participating, promising more lobster-filled merriment, according to Ticket Tailor.
