In an ambitious effort to fuel the entrepreneurial spirit of South Texas, the San Antonio Area Foundation has partnered with Geekdom, a beacon for San Antonio's startup scene, to roll out the "Accelerate South Texas Fund." Drawing on a hefty donation of $500,000 from the deep pockets of local entrepreneur Graham Weston, the fund aims to put some serious wind in the sails of small business growth and innovation throughout the region. The fund is getting additional backing with a substantial $100,000 pledge from Ben Jones, the entrepreneurial force behind Jockey Ventures and Skipcart, aimed explicitly at Geekdom's Pre-Accelerator program.
Spotting the need to stoke the fires of job creation and vivify the business landscape, Weston and Jones have taken steps to put their money where their mouth is. In a statement obtained by the San Antonio Report, Weston elucidated that South Texas needs a greater boost for startup culture and entrepreneurship, while also touting the fund's prospects for creating jobs and opportunities for Texans across the board. Leveraging it, local financial heavyweights like USAA and Frost Bank are expected to dial up their support for the budding tech, training, and entrepreneurship ecosystem.
As Geekdom's influence continues to proliferate across San Antonio with a growth repertoire spanning 260 startups in two years, the aspiration to embolden the wider South Texas entrepreneur landscape grows. These startups, as reported by the San Antonio Report, have not only raised almost $72 million collectively but have also been instrumental in creating jobs and filing patents, with a commendable mix of diversity in leadership.
Looking to further entrench its philanthropic roots in the community, the San Antonio Area Foundation, which administers nearly $1.3 billion in assets, is all set to manage the newly minted fund. According to a statement from Lisa Brunsvold, the Foundation's Interim CEO quoted in the San Antonio Area Foundation, they were chuffed to team up with Geekdom and are inviting visionaries to hop onto this bandwagon of impact. Meanwhile, the Foundation has recently appointed Nadege Souvenir as its CEO, a move wrapping up its nationwide search for leadership.
Entrepreneurial organizations strewn across South Texas, looking to be at the receiving end of this fund, are nudged to step forward and throw their hats in the ring for grants, which will be doled out on an ongoing basis. For those struck by the spirit of generosity, contributions to the Accelerate South Texas fund can be made through the Area Foundation's website, ensuring the continuation of this ambitious push for regional growth.
