If you're headed to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, be prepared for detours, particularly if you're picking someone up. The state Department of Transportation has announced a closure of a portion of the roadway in Terminal 2, following the discovery of a hole during last night's repaving work. As reported by Hawaii News Now, the affected area is between Baggage Claims 19 and 22, and the inner roadway will be "closed until further notice."
For those arriving, the curbside pickup has been temporarily moved. Passengers can now be collected between Baggage Claims 26 and 31, and at the Diamond Head Group Tour area. This closure comes amidst a significant repaving project that was detailed earlier by the Hawaii Department of Transportation, which will impact the airport's traffic until Aug. 6. The repaving, which began on July 29, was initially scheduled for between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. each day.
Detailed instructions have been provided to assist with the changes in traffic flow. The outer roadway is still open for through traffic, and vehicles normally traveling on the inner roadway will be rerouted through the median starting at the International Arrivals group pick-up areas. To help direct the airport users, message boards and signs have been installed both on the roads and within the baggage claim areas, guiding passengers towards the Diamond Head Group Tour area for pickup during the specified hours.
Travelers and those picking up arriving passengers should be cognizant of these changes when planning trips to and from the airport. The signage in place should facilitate a smoother transition despite the inconvenience. "Message boards will be installed to alert motorists of the lane closure and location for passenger pick-up," officials from the Department of Transportation stated as they seek to ameliorate the potential disruption caused by the necessary infrastructure work.
