An incarcerated man with significant health issues who died while under medical care at Valley Medical Center in San Jose adds a new name to the long and mournful roll call of in-custody deaths that plague our local jails.
According to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, the inmate, held at Elmwood Correctional Facility on charges of felony elder abuse, grand theft, and fraud since September 30, was taken to the hospital on October 1 after experiencing chest pains. Despite emergency life-saving efforts by medical staff on Sunday, he was pronounced dead at 5:27 p.m.
The identity of the deceased is yet to be released as authorities probe into the circumstances surrounding the death. The absence of evidence hinting at foul play did not stem the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit from launching an official investigation, as is standard procedure when an individual dies in custody.
