Residents of Redwood City were alerted yesterday following a daylight robbery that has local authorities urging the community to exercise caution. According to a report by the Redwood City Police Department, at about 9 a.m. the previous day, a woman encountered a scam while tending to her garden on the 200 block of Madrone Street.
The victim, engaged in the modest act of watering plants, was approached by strangers in a dark SUV asking for directions. As she assisted them, the female suspect used the guise of gratitude and blessing to deceive her by placing a medallion around her neck, which served as a distraction for the theft of the victim's gold necklace. The commotion allowed the perpetrator to abscond with one of the victim's two chains before fleeing the scene.
The Redwood City Police described the suspects as a Middle Eastern woman thought to be between 50 and 60 years old and a male driver estimated to be 45 to 50 years old and roughly 250 lbs. The woman donned a head covering, and both were last seen driving a dark-colored SUV.
While the names of those involved have not been released, authorities are taking this opportunity to warn residents about similar crimes rising in the Bay Area recently. Community members are advised to remain vigilant when strangers approach and report any dubious activity promptly. In an emergency, the department reiterates the importance of dialing 911, and for non-urgent issues, they provide their non-emergency number, (650)780-7100.
