Irvine's latest stride towards a greener cityscape will come to fruition with the unveiling of its first Class IV protected bikeway, as reported by the official press release from the City of Irvine. Cyclists are invited to ride down the safe new trail at the intersection of Cadence and Benchmark on Tuesday, November 19, from 4-5 p.m. A dedicated lane physically separated from road traffic, the Class IV bikeway welcomes an array of bicycle types, including all classes of e-bikes, paving the way for cleaner and more sustainable urban transport.
"The addition of a Class IV Bikeway to Irvine’s vast bikeway and trail system is what will continue to set the City of Irvine apart as a premier bike destination," Mayor Farrah N. Khan told the City of Irvine. With 113.24 miles of off-street bikeway trails and 286.42 lane miles of on-street bikeways, the network contributes to Irvine's reputation as a city that prioritizes safe, sustainable transportation and extensive leisure opportunities.
The launch of the Class IV bikeway and the addition of the electric street sweeper are integral components of Irvine's forward-thinking Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP), established in 2021. Aimed at reducing emissions aggressively by 2030 and further, the CAAP delineates pathways toward establishing a climate-resilient future. "Through thoughtfully planned greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction and climate adaptation measures, the CAAP will build upon Irvine’s previous steps towards climate leadership in Orange County to create a truly climate-smart City for the future," outlines the city's announcement.
