The Blount County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) and the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) are gearing up to tame the danger on this famed stretch of asphalt. Recognized for its serpentine turns and scenic vistas, the Dragon becomes a beacon for motorcyclists and car aficionados alike. Yet, with popularity comes increased risks, particularly during the summer months.
According to a social media post from the BCSO, last summer's toll on The Dragon was significant, with 112 crashes involving 139 vehicles on the 11-mile stretch, resulting in 47 injuries and five unfortunate fatalities. Officials continue to plead with drivers and riders to remain vigilant, adhere to speed limits, and acknowledge the road's inherent limitations. So far this year, BCSO and THPS have labored through 30 crashes, with 13 individuals sustaining injuries.
"What starts out as a beautiful drive or a fun afternoon ride can turn into a tragedy," voiced Blount County Sheriff James Berrong. Capt. Eric Miller of the Tennessee Highway Patrol echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of obeying the law, wearing protective gear, and showing respect for both the road and fellow travelers.
In response to these concerns, patrols will be bolstered along The Dragon and its neighboring routes as part of an intensive summer safety operation. Along with routine enforcement, authorities will be present to remind wayfarers of the dangers of excessive speed and distracted driving. A special note was made about the prohibition of large commercial trucks on this particular section of U.S. 129 due to the heightened risk they pose on such a narrow, winding road, violations of which can lead not only to steep fines but also grave accidents.
The collaboration between the BCSO and the THP aims to underscore a singular message to the public: slow down, stay alert, and ride with the understanding that your life truly depends on the choices you make on The Dragon. As summer unfolds, keeping travelers safe on one of Tennessee's most captivating yet treacherous routes becomes a shared responsibility we all must bear.
