The rich history of organized labor in the Tenderloin includes that of today's largest San Francisco private sector union, UNITE HERE Local 2. This history stretches from Gold Rush San Francisco to today's era of multinational corporate hospitality chains. In 2004, these forces collided in an epic strike and lockout. Five years later, Local 2 members told their story in "53 Days, Local 2 on Stage". Come see a section of this production and talk to the workers about their experience on the picket line and the proscenium.
Presented by Bill Shields, the Chair of Labor and Community Studies at City College of San Francisco, and the director of the oral history theater project, "Work Tales”. Join us for an evening celebrating the history of the labor movement in the Tenderloin.
