The one-story, flatiron-shaped building that once lived at 2100 Market was home to multiple businesses over several decades. One of its brief incarnations in the 1970s, a 24-hour diner called The Truck Stop, figures into the unsolved case of "The Doodler," a serial killer who preyed on gay men in San Francisco, and about whom Chronicle reporter Kevin Fagan has just done a new podcast.

Since the Castro Merchants launched a broken-window recovery initiative and survey last Thursday, neighborhood business owners have reported 72 incidents of vandalized and broken windows at a cost of $135,472.74.

The Castro/Upper Market Community Benefit District (Castro CBD) has extended the deadline on its security camera survey and delayed an upcoming virtual town hall.

No one was injured, but it's unclear how extensive the damage to the two businesses will be.

The cameras could help stanch the neighborhood's epidemic of petty crime, but they also raise privacy concerns.

Emergency crews responded to flipped SUVs two days in a row, on 15th Street at Noe yesterday afternoon and Market & Gough today.
