A freeway bicycle chase culminated in the arrest of a suspect involved in a family-related shooting in Los Angeles last week. The Los Angeles Police Department reported that on April 26, officers responded to an emergency call around 11:45 a.m. on the 100 Block of East Avenue 36, where 24-year-old John Lopez allegedly shot a family member after a heated argument. Lopez had fled the scene before police arrived but was later spotted pedaling furiously down the 5 Freeway by an LAPD Air Unit, according to department officials.

The chase ensued as LAPD units orchestrated a traffic break to safely follow the suspect, who was weaving through the lanes with apparent desperation. Exiting the freeway, Lopez continued his erratic escape on surface streets until an officer from the Hollenbeck Division ended the pursuit. Using his vehicle to stop Lopez's bicycle on Daly Street, the tactic caused Lopez to tumble and enabled officers to make the arrest. The suspect complained of knee pain and was treated at a local hospital before being booked on charges of Attempt Murder.

Luckily, the victim of the shooting avoided a fatal wound and is recovering after an overnight hospital stay for non-life-threatening injuries. No officers or bystanders suffered harm during the incident. The arresting officers also recovered a small caliber firearm from Lopez. The LAPD's Force Investigation Division is reviewing the case, ensuring all protocols and procedures were correctly followed during the apprehension.
